Guided by a local, we will wander through the old town, the castle and the lake to discover the indelible well-hidden traces of the rich and tragic past and the dynamic present of the city’s Jewish community. Our walk starts from the “crossroads of civilizations”, the Kourmanio district and Yosef Eliya Street, the main thoroughfare of the Jewish body of the city. We continue on Koundourioti Street and the surrounding alleys to get to know the professionally separated districts, wandering mansions but also humble buildings, shops, galleries, alleys that are inextricably linked to the daily life of the Jewish community. We pass the mixed district of Turkopalouko and make a stop at the Holocaust Memorial. We enter the castle through the “Jewish gate” and get lost in its alleys to pass through emblematic points for the social and religious life of the community: Romanesque Synagogue, Matsa square etc. We end up in Molos and Mavili square where one of the most tragic moments of our history was written, starring our Jewish fellow citizens. Come and wander in Ioannina, to get to know our Jewish city up close, as you will not get to know it in the official history textbooks. To discover the “small everyday” but also the “big Historical”, the public history but also the “unacknowledged”, the glow but also the “well hidden secrets” of the glorious and at the same time tragic history of our multicultural city.
